Beyond The Basics:
Recognizing the Connection Between Implicit Bias & CASA Advocacy

Wednesday, August 11, 2021
10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Overview:
CASA Supervisors, Reyana Ugas and Rashida Ballard, will focus on how implicit bias and stereotypes create barriers to cultural responsiveness, and in turn, impact our ability to provide effective advocacy. We’ll explore examples of how we, as CASA Supervisors, see these barriers play out through the assumptions, interactions and reports of CASAs. We’ll then focus on strategies to increase awareness and minimize any harm resulting from our biases. There will be a case scenario for attendees to review and discuss based on the concepts and strategies we focus on towards the end of the session; CASAs who RSVP will receive the case scenario one day prior via email.

Training Goals:
Cultivating awareness of biases and their impact on how we see and go about our practice provides the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of our own decision making. This understanding normalizes that we all have biases while ensuring we’re accountable to continuously reflect on what informs our approach, conclusions and recommendations. This process can help ensure culturally responsive advocacy and more equitable treatment for the children, youth and families that experience the child welfare system.

Note:
This training is designed as a precursor, but not mandatory, for the Race: Power of an Illusion training that will be held this Fall AND will count towards your 3 hour annual ESJ training requirement.
